Is The Constitution Worth Protecting?

The following point is made in the Movie “America 2014” quite clearly even if not spoken as an Apostle would declare these truths. It was made more from the perspective of that Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville. This quote is from Elder Quinten L Cook:

“A return to Judeo-Christian moral principles. This was especially necessary for the Restoration of the gospel. A renewed emphasis on morality occurred in both England and the United States. It involved fervent religious awakenings, including those associated with the area of western New York State.”

“The practice of religious beliefs had been a “principal reason for the original settlements in New England, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.” On the eve of the Revolutionary War, religious pamphlets “topped secular pamphlets from all thirteen colonies by four to one.””

In this so-called Mormon Moment, where there is more attention being paid to the Church and its members, we will need to be the best examples we can possibly be. Restoring Morality and Religious Freedom – Ensign Sept. 2012, BYU Idaho Commencement Address from 16 December 2011

Direct quote from Joseph Smith Collection, LDS Church Historical Department. Joseph Smith on July 19, 1840.)

“Even this nation will be on the very verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground, and when the Constitution is upon the brink of ruin, this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean, and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction.” Direct quote from Joseph Smith Collection, LDS Church Historical Department. Joseph Smith on July 19, 1840.)

Harold B. Lee “Faith – An Effective Weapon Against Wickedness in Men and Nations” 912-13 )

“It was Joseph Smith who has been quoted as having said that the time would come when then Constitution would hang as by a thread, and at that time when it was thus in jeopardy, the elders of this Church would step forth and save it from destruction.”

“Why the elders of this Church? Would it be sacrilegious to paraphrase the words of the Apostle Peter, and say that the Constitution of the United States could be saved by the elders of this Church because this Church and this Church alone has the words of eternal life? We alone know by revelation as to how the Constitution came into being, and we, alone, know by revelation the destiny of this nation. The preservation of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” can be guaranteed upon no other basis than upon a sincere faith and testimony of the divinity of these teachings.”

Joseph F. Smith “The Mexican Trouble – Loyalty to the Constitution” 101-02)

” Joseph Smith, the prophet, was inspired to affirm and ratify this truth, and he further predicted that the time would come, when the Constitution of our country would hang as it were by a thread, and that the Latter-day Saints above all other people in the world would come to the rescue of that great and glorious palladium of our liberty. We cannot brook the thought of it being torn into shreds, or destroyed, or trampled under foot and ignored by men. We cannot tolerate the sentiment, at one time expressed, by a man, high in authority in the nation. He said: “The Constitution be damned; the popular sentiment of the people is the Constitution!” That is the sentiment of anarchism that has spread to a certain extent, and is spreading over “the land of liberty and home of the brave.” We do not tolerate it. Latter-day Saints cannot tolerate such a spirit as this. It is anarchy. It means destruction. It is the spirit of mobocracy, and the Lord knows we have suffered enough from mobocracy, and we do not want any more of it. Our people from Mexico are suffering from the effects of that same spirit. We do not want any more of it, and we cannot afford to yield to that spirit or contribute to it in the least degree. We should stand with a front like flint against every spirit or species of contempt or disrespect for the Constitution of our country and the constitutional laws of our land..”

And the last quote for now on this topic from a Prophet of God, by Ezra Taft Benson:

Will we be prepared? Will we be among those who will “bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction?” If we desire to be numbered among those who will, here are some things we must do:

1. We must be righteous and moral. We must live the gospel principles—all of them. We have no right to expect a higher degree of morality from those who represent us than what we ourselves are. In the final analysis, people generally get the kind of government they deserve. To live a higher law means we will not seek to receive what we have not earned by our own labor. It means we will remember that government owes us nothing. It means we will keep the laws of the land. It means we will look to God as our Lawgiver and the Source of our liberty.

2. We must learn the principles of the Constitution and then abide by its precepts. We have been instructed again and again to reflect more intently on the meaning and importance of the Constitution and to adhere to its principles. What have we done about this instruction? Have we read the Constitution and pondered it? Are we aware of its principles? Could we defend it? Can we recognize when a law is constitutionally unsound? The Church will not tell us how to do this, but we are admonished to do it. I quote Abraham Lincoln: “Let [the Constitution] be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges, let it be written in primers, in spelling books and in almanacs, let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And, in short, let it become the political religion of the nation.”

3. We must become involved in civic affairs. As citizens of this republic, we cannot do our duty and be idle spectators. It is vital that we follow this counsel from the Lord: “I, the Lord God, make you free, therefore ye are free indeed; and the law also maketh you free. Nevertheless, when the wicked rule the people mourn. Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold; otherwise whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil. And I give unto you a commandment, that ye shall forsake all evil and cleave unto all good, that ye shall live by every word which proceedeth forth out of the mouth of God” (D&C 98:8–11).

Note the qualities that the Lord demands in those who are to represent us. They must be good, wise, and honest. Some leaders may be honest and good but unwise in legislation they choose to support. Others may possess wisdom but be dishonest and unvirtuous. We must be concerted in our desires and efforts to see men and women represent us who possess all three of these qualities.

4. We must make our influence felt by our vote, our letters, and our advice. We must be wisely informed and let others know how we feel. We must take part in local precinct meetings and select delegates who will truly represent our feelings.

I have faith that the Constitution will be saved as prophesied by Joseph Smith. But it will not be saved in Washington. It will be saved by the citizens of this nation who love and cherish freedom. It will be saved by enlightened members of this Church — men and women who will subscribe to and abide the principles of the Constitution.

Here is the page I got these quotes from as Brian Mecham has proven to be thorough in his research and quoting of Church leaders.

The Constitution Hanging by a Thread and the “White Horse Prophecy”
Did Joseph Smith really say the Constitution would be hanging by a thread, the nation would be on the verge of crumbling to pieces and the Elder’s of Israel would save the Constitution?

I would have posted these in a response to people questioning my mixing of religion and politics about this subject. It was in response to this article linked in the friend’s page that inspired me to post there;

Movie Review: America, Imagine the World Without Her
Dinesh D’Souza’s new documentary, America: Imagine the World Without Her is, let’s admit it, a competently made piece of Tea Party propaganda. I saw it at a matinee at 10:30 in the morning, and th…

“This article is an anti history and angry article, to be simplistic. Thanks for digging up some more anti Constitutional articles; so we know what the restoration, that the Elders of Zion need to be involved in are up against. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we know that the Constitution is an inspired document and will be hanging by a thread when it will need to be saved as the prophets have declared for many of the years of America’s existence. Now may be a time to take that call serious! “

My response above was easy to make fun of. I do think it was true and worth repeating here on my own page. And possibly interpreting my poorly expressed ideas and thoughts which come from 25 years of studying these quotes I included here. I see the goal of this person’s write-up to be angry with the film “America 2014” and a misrepresentation of what was said and shown. It was used as an effective tool to help people make up their minds that the movie was not worth seeing because it was exactly like Michael Moore’s famous and very successful “Fahrenheit 9/11”.

This is not true and is misleading to say a movie made to destroy an inspired form of government is identical to a movie designed and even more effective at protecting that same Constitutional representative republic form of government. I think that people who want to destroy and change fundamental principles of the Constitution are angry and anti Constitution as well as the history of it’s successes. Actually I never saw the Moore movie as I do avoid anti Constitution literature, just as I avoid anti Mormon literature.

Well I stand by my thoughts and do pray for more people to study and pray for guidance in these most important matters as I seek the same needed guidance to build, restore and change for the better while rejecting the counterfeit of good and the destruction of what God has put into place. These times are inflamed with anger against many things and Satan has a central role in attempting the destruction of what is good to be replaced with anything less. I am thankful for the scriptures and how they have truth relating to all of life to draw from. The balance of life is worth the work to accomplish what God called us to do.
